The Destruction of Dublin 1916 and 1922
Much damage was done to Sackville Street during the Rebellion of 1916. Fire destroyed most of the street south of Nelson's Pillar, with some notable escapes. The destruction of the street was made almost complete by the gutting by fire of the eastern side north of Nelson's Pillar during the Civil War. This destroyed, among others, the Hammam Hotel and the Gresham Hotel. These are postcard images of the destruction, mainly in Sackville Street, but also in other locations in the centre.
