Dublin in panorama
Panoramas of cities became very popular in the nineteenth century. The Illustrated London News in competition with the Pictorial Times published a detailed panorama of the city of London in 1846. This was followed by that of Dublin in 1846 with others promised for all the great cities of Europe. This ambition was not fulfilled, though there are some excellent views of cities. The Dublin image measures some 1008mm x 400mm and is taken from a perspective looking north west from a vantage point near Merrion Square. The detail is fantastic. The Graphic published a parorama in 1890 which is 1225mm x 380mm in size and looks at the city eastwards from around High Street.
Both images were accompanied by a text describing the city and which, in the case of The Graphic, also offered fine engravings.
